Laura Copenhaver
RESUMEChat GPT will tell you I have a track record of leading multidisciplinary creative teams, building cohesive brand systems, and delivering high-impact campaigns across digital, print, and social channels. Also, that I bring both strategic vision and hands-on execution to in-house environments where speed, collaboration, and brand stewardship are essential…
Although the Chat GPT intro is all technically accurate, it doesn’t get to the heart of what I bring to my work—creative courage and strategic insight. It’s these divergent qualities that make me stand out as a leader in my profession.
Thought Leadership
I love to go deep into research and problem solving when developing a campaign concept. I want to be able to speak articulately on every creative decision I’ve made. It’s through this thorough framing of the work that I bring confidence and clarity to everyone from executive stakeholders to production designers. The “why” and “how” is always clear with me.
Campaign Work
Campaign concepts come from a synthesis of dozens of inputs. Sometimes they hit like a lightning bolt and sometimes they come into focus gradually. Once an idea has been landed, it needs to be developed and protected. That is where the courage part comes in. As a creative director, it is my job to translate the big idea into a shoot, an edit and then a design execution phase that spans six months and covers dozens of media and hundreds of deliverables. There are sometimes 30-40 people who help to bring the work to life. While working with them, I need to stay true to the original intent while also remaining nimble enough to address differences in channels and points of view. A good example of this would be determining how the campaign shows up in a catalog vs. a mid-funnel social post.
Team Building
I love working with other creatives—whether it’s building a top-notch creative squad from scratch or developing a renewed culture of curiosity and confidence in a team that has been around the block. I get deep satisfaction from creating an environment where great work can be made and people love their job. As a practicing creative, I have deep empathy and appreciation for the folks I work with. I find myself flexing from feedback giver, to sounding board, to field marshal. Whatever is needed to help get the assignment done and keep the work flowing.
ART—Photography, Painting and Collage
I’ve been making marks since before I could walk. It’s a drive like eating and sleeping. I would love to say that I have a clear and profound philosophical reason for the art that I make, (I know my RISD teachers would want that for sure), but I don’t really. I just make it because it makes me happy. It scratches a profound itch. The closest I can come to an all-abiding rationale is that I like to make beautiful things out of messy things. Jumbled lines, smeared paint, rusted metal—are all beautiful to me when they transcend their inherent ugliness through lighting and composition.
